YPSILANTI - Eastern Michigan University will kick off its first ever one-day fundraising campaign December 3, 2013, to coincide with the national #GivingTuesday movement.
#GivingTuesday, a nationally recognized movement, falls on the heels of Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday and serves as the official start of the giving season, in the same way Black Friday and Cyber Monday symbolically begin the holiday shopping season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support non-profit organizations.
“GivingTuesday at EMU will serve as the official kickoff of our year-end fundraising efforts,” said Tom Stevick, Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director of the EMU Foundation. “We’re encouraging all of our loyal supporters to make a year-end gift on December 3 to help the students, faculty and programs at EMU.”
Eastern Michigan will be capitalizing on the social media voice of its alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students to spread the word about the movement at the University. EMU is encouraging its supporters to take the pledge and let others know through Facebook and Twitter that they will be giving back to EMU on Dec. 3.
In addition to the online grassroots effort to spread the word about the one-day campaign, Eastern Michigan University will be hosting two events on Dec. 3.
With a focus on student philanthropy, EMU will host a #GivingTuesday celebration at the Student Center main food court stage from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature great music with DJ "MikeDeeBest," a photo booth and the chance for students to win a Kindle Fire HD.
The #GivingTuesday celebration at the Student Center will allow us to educate, engage and excite current EMU students about the importance and impact of supporting the University,” said Stevick.
EMU will continue that excitement at the men’s home basketball game at 7 p.m. There will be a check presentation during the game with the amount of money raised that day through 7 p.m., as well as last-minute opportunities for students and supporters to be counted and make their gift before the midnight deadline.
Eastern will be counting gifts of any size to any fund on campus given online, over the phone and through the mail as part of its #GivingTuesday campaign.
