YPSILANTI - More than 2,600 students are eligible to participate in Eastern Michigan University’s spring commencement ceremonies Sunday, April 27 at the EMU Convocation Center. The morning ceremony, which begins at 9:30 a.m., will be for students from the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Technology.  The 2 p.m. ceremony is for students from the College of Business, the College of Education and the College of Health and Human Services.

Dale Heydlauff, vice president of corporate communications for American Electric Power and president of the American Electric Power Foundation in Ohio, will be the morning’s guest speaker. Heydlauff will also receive an honorary doctor of arts degree. He graduated from Eastern in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and communication.

Excited new graduates from last year's ceremony.

David Provost, chairman, president and CEO of Talmer Bank and Trust, and president and CEO of Talmer Bancorp, Inc. the third largest bank headquartered in Michigan, will speak at the 2 p.m. ceremony. He will receive an honorary doctor of business degree. Provost graduated from EMU in 1984 with a master’s degree in business administration.

The graduates represent an historic educational legacy of Eastern Michigan students dating back to 1849 when the university was established. It is the second oldest public university in the state.

Participants will wear an environmentally friendly type of regalia – gowns fashioned out of recycled plastic bottles, which debuted at EMU in 2011. Undergraduates will wear dark green camps and robes. Master’s students will be dressed in traditional black. Doctoral robes will be dark green and black, with dark green velvet panels trimmed in white cord. All robes will have the university seal embroidered on the front two tabs.

Also noteworthy is the awarding of an honorary Doctor of Business degree to His Excellency Khalifa Mohamed Al Kindi, managing director of the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, who graduated in 1982 from Eastern Michigan.
