YPSILANTI – The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents today approved a $12.6 million capital budget for 2014-2015 that includes significant investment for supporting the new physician assistant program and growth in the College of Health and Human Services.

Investments in academic facilities and campus technology account for two-thirds of the recommended capital spending. The recommended budget also reflects Eastern Michigan’s continuing commitment to upgrade campus technology, both in classrooms and in other campus buildings.

Major projects in the new 2014-2015 capital budget and their costs include:

Academic facility enhancements: $5.7 million, including $4.8 million for Rackham Hall renovations; technology: $2.7 million; safety and security: $922,000, and additional campus capital investment: $3.3 million.

In addition, the Board voted to place on file for consideration a three-year, $36.9 million capital plan for 2014-2015 through 2016-2017.

The long-term capital plan earmarks $36.9 million for significant investments in various areas, including academic facilities ($10.3 million); information technology ($8.5 million); housing, dining and student programming ($4.1 million); safety and security ($2.9 million); asset preservation ($2.6 million, general fund); asset preservation ($2.6 million, auxiliary fund for residential and dining facilities); parking and roadways ($2.2 million); athletics facilities ($1.8 million); energy conservation ($300,000) and other ($1.4 million).

Ongoing investments in academic buildings and technology represent more than half of the projected three-year spending ($18.8 million).

The $4.1 million in capital investment for housing, dining and student facility renovations includes $3 million for Wise Hall, the next EMU residence hall to undergo a major renovation, scheduled for summer 2015.
