EMU NAMES PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH COMMITTEE
MEMBERS
YPSILANTI &emdash; The Eastern Michigan
University Board of Regents announced the names of the members of its
presidential search committee at a special meeting June 1. Regent
Philip A. Incarnati of Flint will chair the search committee. Regents
Joseph E. Antonini of Troy, Robert A. DeMattia of Plymouth and
Rosalind E. Griffin of Farmington Hills will also serve on the
committee. Other University representatives on the committee
are:
student representative Tracy
Sturdivant, president of student government;
faculty representative Sally
McCracken, professor of communication and theatre arts and member of
Faculty Council;
staff representative Jim Vick,
assistant vice president of University Marketing and Student
Affairs;
community representative Anthony
Snoddy, president of Exemplar Manufacturing Co. of
Ypsilanti;
and alumni representative David
P. Artley, president of EMU's alumni association.
The composition of the search committee
is stipulated by Michigan state law.
Incarnati said that Heidrick and
Struggles Inc. of Chicago have been chosen as the consulting firm for
identifying candidates to replace EMU President William E. Shelton,
who announced his retirement in March. William J. Bowen, vice
chairman and co-managing partner of Heidrick and Struggles' higher
education/non-profit practice area, will lead the candidate
search.
"We identified the best firms with the
best experience at finding quality candidates," Incarnati said. "Once
you know you've got good firms it comes down to
chemistry."
Incarnati said that Heidrick and
Struggles Inc. were chosen because of the firm's extensive experience
in higher education searches. Heidrick and Struggles Inc. have
conducted more than 600 academic searches, 300 of which have been for
presidents or chancellors. Clients have included Cornell University,
Arizona State University, George Washington University and Lehigh
University.
"Our goal is to have an individual
selected within seven months," said Incarnati. Incarnati said that
the first order of business would be to convene the search committee
and the consulting firm and establish dates for meetings.
