EMU's Hobson honored for her counseling achievements

YPSILANTI   -   Suzanne Hobson, associate professor in the leadership and counseling department at Eastern Michigan University, was honored recently by the Association of Michigan School Counselors (AMSC) and the Michigan Counseling Association (MCA). Hobson received plaques of recognition at the MCA conference in Detroit.

Hobson received an Outstanding Service to the Profession Award from the AMSC in recognition of the integral role she played in founding the association and developing it into MCA's largest division.

She also was honored with a Legislative Service Award from MCA in recognition of legislative advocacy activities on behalf of licensed professional counselors and for the key roles she played in addressing credentialing issues for school counselors.

"This (AMSC) award means a great deal to me as I invested tremendous energy into developing this association. It has been extremely rewarding to be involved in its development from the ground up," said Hobson. "The association is near and dear to my heart and the public recognition is deeply appreciated.

"(Receiving) the Legislative Service Award was wonderfully meaningful to me. As a past president of MCA, I have long been involved in legislative and advocacy activities on behalf of the profession," she said.

Hobson, who has been with the University since 1997, teaches graduate level courses in counseling, coordinating a counseling clinic, supervising clinical practicum students and interns, conducting an active research agenda and providing service to a university community and profession.

Hobson, a resident of Ypsilanti, is also a counselor and psychologist with the Counseling Center of Ann Arbor.

She has a doctorate in counseling psychology from Western Michigan University, a master's degree in counseling from Central Michigan University and a bachelor's degree in psychology and social relations from Harvard University.

MCA is the state's largest counseling association and serves as an umbrella

organization addressing the needs and legislative interests of 16 specialty divisions. AMSC is one of the specialty divisions of MCA.
