Student volunteers lend a hand to help communities during spring break

YPSILANTI - Spring Break usually signals the start of a week-long vacation for most colleges. At Eastern Michigan University, however, it means a time for helping others while making a difference in six communities around the country.

Dayna Hasty, 23, a senior from Dearborn Heights, Mich., and 45 other EMU students will leave campus Feb. 25 and travel to various locations throughout the country as part of Alternative Spring Break (ASB). The ASB program is part of EMU's VISION (Volunteers Incorporating Service Into Our Neighborhoods) program. EMU students have been participating in ASB since 1992.

"This is my first year with Alternative Spring Break," said Hasty, who will travel to Hammond, LA., to plant bald cypress trees in an area wiped out by logging. "I can't wait. I'll be learning about environmental issues."

EMU students also will be tutoring at Fisher Elementary School in New Orleans, LA.; restoring trails at Oleno State Park in High Springs, Fla.; working with children at the School for the Deaf and Blind at Spartanburg, S.C.; helping out at the Jacksonville Area Sexual Minority Youth Network in Jacksonville, Fla.; and doing service projects at the Jewish Volunteer Connection in Baltimore, Md.

EDITOR'S NOTE : Students will be leaving from the lower level of McKenny Union, Friday, Feb. 25, 2 p.m.
