EMU Board of Regents grant emeritus staff status to one

YPSILANTI - The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents granted emeritus staff status to Karen Holmes at its regular meeting March 15.

Holmes, of Canton, served EMU for 20 years as a full-time lecturer, teaching mathematics in the calculus preparatory track, mathematics for elementary teaching and developmental mathematics. Her greatest contribution was enabling students to succeed in programs that they thought   were out of reach because of weak mathematical skills and background, said Bette Warren, head of the math department.

"She helped them prove to themselves that they were capable of mastering and, even enjoying a subject, that had previously only represented fear and frustration," Warren said.

Holmes earned both her Ph.D. and master's degrees from Eastern Michigan University.
