Congressman Dingell, Gen. (Ret.) Coburn to speak at EMU Commencement April 30
YPSILANTI - Congressman John D. Dingell (MI-15) and General (Ret.) John G. Coburn, chairman and CEO of VT Systems, Inc., will be the guest speakers at Eastern Michigan University’s commencement ceremonies April 30 at the Convocation Center.
Coburn will speak at the morning ceremony (10:30 a.m.), while Dingell will deliver the keynote address at the afternoon ceremony (2 p.m.). Both speakers will receive honorary degrees of public service.
Dingell is the Dean of the House of Representatives and has represented southeast Michigan since 1955. He authored the 1990 Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act. He also took a leading role in creating the “Do Not Call” list in 2003. Congressman Dingell celebrated his 50th anniversary in the US House Dec.13, 2005.
Coburn, who graduated from EMU in 1962, is chairman and CEO of VT Systems, Inc. VTS provides engineering solutions, products, integrated systems, and services in the America’s across the core business areas of aerospace, electronics, marine and land systems. Headquartered in Alexandria, Va., VTS operates throughout North America and offers a broad range of proven innovative services to both the commercial and government sectors.
General Coburn retired from the United States Army in November 2001 after 39 years of service. His last assignment was Commanding General, U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC). Prior to this assignment, he served as deputy chief of staff for Logistics, Department of the Army. AMC, with an annual budget of $19.2 billion, is one of the largest commands in the Army with nearly 50,000 employees, and activities in 42 states and more than 28 foreign countries. As deputy chief of staff Coburn was directly responsible for acquisition, contracting, research and development, foreign military sales, industrial base development, ammunition, program management and sustainment for the U.S. Army.
