EMU's Walk for Women's Athletics to raise money for scholarships April 16

YPSILANTI - Eastern Michigan University's women athletes have made great strides during the past four years and, with the help of campus walkers, they can continue to do so.

The Fourth Annual Walk for Women's Athletics is Saturday, April 16, 9:45 a.m., at Bowen Field House. The event raises money for fifth-year scholarship aid for female student athletes who have exhausted their eligibility, but still have additional classes to take before graduating.

This walk will start and end on main campus, allowing participants a chance to see where student-athletes live, study and train.

"In the past, they walked around the track," said Eric Seidelman, EMU's event marketing and promotions coordinator. "This year, we're hoping to incorporate more of the University in the walking route."

Nearly 300 female student-athletes will be supported by monies raised from the walk as well as new programs associated with the walk.   EMU offers scholarships for all women's sports, including basketball, softball, volleyball, swimming and diving, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, tennis, track and field, and crew.

Registration and a silent auction are at 9 a.m. and a welcome ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. A continental breakfast and an awards presentation are at 10:15 a.m. Everyone is welcome to stay for the Spring "Green and White" football game, scheduled for 1 p.m. at Rynearson Stadium.

Silent auction items include team warm-ups, sweatshirts, T-shirts, weekend vacations, health club vouchers and more. Bidding on items will begin at $20. All proceeds will go directly for scholarship assistance and wellness needs of EMU's female student athletes.

To walk, adult participants must contribute a $25 pledge or be willing to raise that amount

for the walk. Students and children can participate for $10. If participants are registered by April 8, they will receive $5 off all registrations under their name. Anyone can support women's athletics by pledging as an individual, a team or as a business sponsor. For more information, call Seidelman at 487-7859.
