EMU students, Hayes Jones join capitol run for higher education April 26
YPSILANTI — EMU graduate and 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist Hayes Jones will join current EMU students and State Representative John Stewart (R-20th) in a “Run and Rally” for higher education April 26 in Lansing.
“We hope the run will attract greater attention on behalf of higher education for the entire state of Michigan,” said Stewart, chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Higher Education. “We need to focus on the need for a higher quality of education, like I received at Eastern Michigan from 1967 to 1971.”
The day begins with Stewart leading a two-mile jog beginning at 8:30 a.m., at Liberty Christian Church, 2215 E. Michigan Ave. He will be joined by students from Michigan’s public and private universities, firefighters and fellow legislators.
After the run, Stewart and educational leaders will speak in front of the state Capitol. Speakers will include: Michael Boulus, executive director of the Presidents Council State Universities of Michigan, which represents Michigan’s 15 public universities; and Edward Blews, Jr., president of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Michigan.
