EMUís counseling clinic offers summer tune-up for parenting skills

YPSILANTI — With the arrival of summer and the end of school, parents and their children may find themselves at odds over activities and lifestyles.

To help parents, Eastern Michigan University’s College of Education’s clinical suite will host two, three-day seminars called Active Parenting Now. Active Parenting Now is an acclaimed video and discussion program that has been proven to successfully promote communication; teach problem-solving skills and diffuse power struggles between parents and children.

Session I runs Mondays, May 8, 15 and 22, from 7-9 p.m. Session II is scheduled Wednesdays, May 10, 17 and 24, 7-9 p.m. Both will be at the College of Education’s clinical suite, 135 Porter, on EMU’s main campus in Ypsilanti. The cost per family is $20. Advance registration is required. Call 734.487.4410 for more information.

Designed for parents of children, ages 5-12, the program will cover a wide range of issues ranging from how to teach children responsibility to preparing parents for the tumultuous teen years, says Perry Francis, counseling clinic coordinator and a licensed professional counselor.

“This is a great summer tune-up for parenting skills,” said Francis. “As parents begin to look at interacting more with children this summer, these sessions will help parents and children reconnect for family activities.”

EMU’s clinical suite has served the public since 1998. It is a training facility within the College of Education that includes a speech and hearing clinic, a reading clinic and a counseling clinic. The counseling clinic serves the public and students at EMU with individual and small group counseling for a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, anger and stress management, and behavioral and emotional problems in childhood and adolescence. All counselors-in-training are supervised by fully licensed professional counselors who are also faculty in the Department of Leadership and Counseling.
