EMU announces $5,000 reward for apprehension of rapist
YPSILANTI - Eastern Michigan University officials announced today that they are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person wanted in association with a criminal sexual assault against an EMU student.
"This crime has affected our entire University community," Craig Willis, interim president said. "We want to do everything we can to help bring this perpetrator to justice. Hopefully, this reward will encourage someone who may have information to come forward."
According to University Police, a 21-year old EMU student was criminally sexually assaulted May 11, 2005 in 413 Mark-Jefferson.
The victim was working with a partner in a science lab. Her partner left the lab to get food, leaving the victim alone. While she was alone, the alleged suspect entered the lab then forced her into an adjacent room where he assaulted her. During the attack, the perpetrator was distracted by noise in the main lab. When he went to investigate, the victim was able to escape. She ran out of the building to Strong Hall where an EMU staff member called for help.
The victim described her attacker as a black male, approximately 5 feet, 11 inches to 6 feet tall, wearing red and white tennis shoes and a blue hockey jersey with white lettering. A computer-generated composite sketch of the suspect can be found at http://www.emich.edu/suspect.html
"Although we have posted hundreds of flyers around campus and the media has published a computer-generated composite of the suspect, we have only received a few leads to date," Cindy Hall, EMU police chief, said.
Anyone with information regarding the suspect or incident is urged to call CRIME STOPPERS TIP LINE at 800.SPEAK - UP (773.2587) or the EMU Police at 734.487.1222.
