Eastern Michigan University Launches First Brand Campaign

'Education First' Tagline Captures EMU Learning Experience

YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is launching a new integrated marketing communications campaign this week that will aggressively brand the university’s laser focus on education and providing students and faculty with a caring and practical learning environment.  The $1 million campaign for 2007-2008 will include print, outdoor and broadcast media, and will celebrate EMU’s unique academic-focused brand.

“As one of the Midwest’s premiere colleges, Eastern Michigan University delivers high-quality education that allows our students to put to use the practical knowledge they obtain here,” said Don Loppnow, provost and executive vice president of Eastern Michigan University.  “Our mission has always been to provide students with an excellent education upon which they can build successful careers in their chosen profession. Our new tagline, ‘Education First,’ is a rallying point for unifying and differentiating EMU.”

“Education First” captures EMU’s core attributes of excellence, scholarship, accessibility, relevance and affordability.  The campaign uses points of distinction and current student and Southeast Michigan employer testimonials to convey the spirit of student-focused education.

“This campaign allows us to highlight EMU’s caring and practical learning environment,” said Theodore G. Coutilish, associate vice president of marketing and communications for Eastern Michigan University.

“The ‘Education First’ theme captures the essence of our mission, our core values, our strengths, and our culture, and sets us apart,” Coutilish said.

The campaign also will more clearly align EMU’s academic units with the university’s overall brand by providing the flexibility for the tagline to incorporate fields of study, for example, “Business Education First.”

In addition to being placed on campus light poles and buildings, the tagline will be promoted through a refined integrated university and athletic identity system, including a new series of logos and typefaces; radio and television advertising; placed on 22 billboards and 12 SMART/AATA buses throughout southeastern Michigan; on the back of 10 Coke trucks, EMU’s soft drink provider; and advertised on the LED screen at Tigers’ home games at Comerica Park.

Eastern Michigan University is a public, comprehensive university that offers programs in the arts, sciences and professions. EMU prepares students with the intellectual skills and practical experiences to succeed in their careers and lives, and to be better citizens.
