WEMU 89.1 joins "Michigan Cares" fundraising event to help victims of Hurricane Katrina

YPSILANTI - WEMU (89.1 FM), Eastern Michigan University’s public radio station, will join stations across the state for “Michigan Cares,” a fundraising event for the victims of Hurricane Katrina Friday, Sept. 9, 6-9 a.m.

Public and commercial stations will join forces to raise funds for the American Red Cross. Anyone interested in making a donation can call 1.800.HELP.NOW (1.800.435.7669).

“This is a national crisis,” said WEMU General Manager Art Timko. “Public and commercial broadcasters are all united behind this cause. WEMU is proud to be part of this effort and we expect that our listeners will rise to the occasion just as they do for station fundraisers.”

Public stations such as WEMU are prohibited by law to solicit funds for organizations other than themselves, but the Federal Communication Commission issued a waiver for this particular event.

“This is unprecedented,” said Clark Smith, WEMU news director, of the waiver. “Virtually every station in the state will be participating,”

According to Smith, Michigan will be part of a nationwide effort by radio broadcasters.

The event is being organized by Governor Jennifer Granholm, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters and the Michigan Association of Public Broadcasters.

WEMU is a listener-supported National Public Radio affiliate with a format of local news and public affairs, jazz, and blues in addition to NPR news, information and cultural programming. The station broadcasts to an eight-county area including all or part of Washtenaw, Wayne, Oakland, Livingston, Jackson, Lenawee, Monroe and Lucas (Ohio) and Webcasts live 24 hours a day at wemu.org.
