Eastern Michigan to host “Straight Talk” with Rep. John Stewart, Sept. 29
YPSILANTI - School funding, the state budget and decreasing appropriations are just some of the current issues to be discussed when Eastern Michigan University hosts “Straight Talk,” a question-and-answer program with Rep. John Stewart (R-Plymouth), Thursday, Sept. 29, 7-9 p.m. at EMU’s Sponberg Theatre. Clark Smith, news director of WEMU 89.1 FM, will moderate.
Stewart, a 1971 graduate of EMU, is chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee for Higher Education.
The program promotes interaction between legislators and students and allows students to question legislators about funding for higher education and other issues, said Stewart.
“There is a need to increase awareness among students and to get them involved because higher education funding is a priority,” he said. “Higher education is the essence of recovery for the economy of the state of Michigan. They (universities) are the economic engines for the jobs of the future.”
This is the first time that a legislator has visited Michigan campuses to meet with students in such a setting, said Stewart.
“We’re looking forward to having Rep. Stewart on campus to interact with our students and others,” said Juanita Reid, vice president, university relations.
