Pirate-themed EMU Family Day provides educational treasures, fun Oct. 7

YPSILANTI — An African dance troupe, bagpipers, super heroes and library robots may not have much in common with pirates, but they will Oct. 7 as Eastern Michigan University provides a pirate theme to its annual Family Day, noon-4 p.m., on EMU’s main campus in Ypsilanti.

            Children, teens and adults can pick up a treasure map on Family Day and experience a variety of free activities:

Especially for children:

  • The Great Bobini, a deaf musician who has thrilled thousands of children
  • Decorate your own pirate and parrot puppets
  • Make friends with exotic live animals
  • Meet some friendly spiders; and try your hand at science experiments.
  • Learn safety tips and get up close and personal with an antique fire truck

For the entire family:

  • Music by the Silver Strings Dulcimer Society and Ypsilanti High School Jazz Band
  • Learn about African Americans in the Civil War with the 102nd Colored Infantry 
  • Dance to the sounds of Africa with Like Water Drum and Dance troupe
  • Explore the men and their baseball teams who made history in the Negro Leagues and meet players from The Henry Ford’s early baseball team
  • Thrill to the sounds of Scottish bagpipes and colonial fifes and drums
  • Pick up tips to keep the entire family healthy
  • Learn to beat the odds with statistics
