EMU student newspaper receives eight awards from Michigan Collegiate Press Association
YPSILANTI - The Eastern Echo, Eastern Michigan University’s student newspaper, won eight awards at the recent Michigan Collegiate Press Association contest.
The Echo received second place overall in the general excellence category, while taking first place in the categories of deadline writing, classified section, columns and reviews.
“It is truly a team effort,” said Nathan Bomey, current managing editor of the Echo. Bomey, of Saline, was the news editor for the Echo at the time and won first place for deadline writing (with Brian Calloway of Coloma), second place for non-deadline writing, and shared a second place honor with Jason Idalski, of Center Line, for investigative reporting.
Drew Dorian of Brooklyn and Idalski were the Echo’s other first place winners. Dorian won in the reviews category, while Idalski won for column writing.
Kurt Hunt of Ypsilanti won third place in the non-deadline story category.
Bomey and Echo photographer Craig Watson of Ypsilanti also were part of professional newspapers that won awards from the Michigan Press Association. Watson won second place in the sports picture category for his work with the Chelsea Standard. Bomey is a reporter for the Saline Reporter, which won honorable mention for its lifestyle pages in the weekly class C category.
The Eastern Echo is published three times a week from fall to spring.
