EMU's Student Center hosts grand opening events Nov. 6-17

YPSILANTI — The big day is finally here for Eastern Michigan University’s students, faculty and staff. Starting Monday, Nov. 6, the EMU Student Center will showcase a diverse sampling of events and performances to celebrate the facility’s grand opening next week. Festivities begin Nov. 6, with an 11 a.m. ribbon-cutting, time capsule and cornerstone ceremony, and concludes with a formal dedication ceremony for the facility, Friday, Nov. 17.

The EMU Student Center will offer free tours leaving from the University Information Center every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 7 to 8 p.m. on each of the dates listed below. Highlights of the grand opening events include:

Monday, Nov. 6

Grand Opening Day: Ribbon cutting, time capsule and cornerstone ceremony at 11 a.m. (West Entrance); Monday Midday Movie Mission Impossible 3 at noon and 2:30 p.m. in the Auditorium; Kiva Room blessing at 1 p.m.; coffee break from 3 to 4 p.m. in Room 300; dedication of the University and Student Art galleries, featuring the opening of the first University Art Gallery shows, “Leaping Lizards: Comic Art,” and “Pop Rocks!” from 4 to 6 p.m.; Computer Lab dedication at 5 p.m.; and the EMU Jazz Ensemble Concert at 8 p.m. in the Auditorium.

Tuesday, Nov. 7

Commuter Appreciation Day: Snacks available from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., followed by Commuter Services workshops at 10 a.m. in Commuter Central; coffee break at 7:30 and 10 a.m. in Room 300; Health Stop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the first floor lobby; Madden ’07 Football Tournament from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom; Creative Writing Program’s Mixed Media Installation from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Stairwell Lounge; Mid-Term Election Results in the Auditorium from noon to 1 a.m.; Coach’s Leadership Lecture featuring EMU Athletic Director Derrick Gragg (first in a series focusing on leadership) at 7 p.m. in the Kiva Room; and Texas Hold ‘Em at 7 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom.

Wednesday, Nov. 8

Heritage Day: Coffee break at 7:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. in Room 300; Campus Creed Kickoff at noon and Mural Dedication at 12:30 in the 2nd Floor Stairwell Lounge; Dialogue Zone Kickoff and Election Debriefing at 2 p.m. in the Kiva Room; Refreshments and fun with New Student Orientation Assistants and First-Year Mentor program staff from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Room 300. Holman Learning Center Study and Tutor Tables from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Food Court Dining Area; and Poetry Society Performance and Open Mic at 8 p.m. in Room 300.

Thursday, Nov. 9

Campus/Student Involvement Day: Coffee break at 7:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. in Room 300; Thursday Noon Tunes (live acoustic music) from noon to 1 p.m. at the Dining Area Stage; Center for Student Involvement Open House from noon to 3 p.m. in Room 340; Rec/IM Annual 5K Turkey Trot at 4 p.m. (registration begins at 3 p.m. in room 310B); No U Turn live musical performance from 3:30 to 3:45 p.m. at the Dining Area Stage; Student Organization appreciation event from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Room 300; dedication of sculpture by John N. Pappas at 4:30 p.m. in the West Entrance corridor; Comic Art Symposium at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium; Thursday Night Tunes (live bands) from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Dining Area Stage; Annual Greek Life Convocation at 7 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom; and Van Wilder movie followed by an acoustic jam session starting at 10 p.m. in the Auditorium.

Friday, Nov. 10

EMU Faculty and Staff Day: Coffee break at 7:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. in Room 300; Friday Night Movie Talladega Nights at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium; and CloseUP Theatre Troupe’s 10th Anniversary performance at 10 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom.

Saturday, Nov. 11

EMU Families and Fun Day:Ant Bully movie at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. in the Auditorium; Children’s Story Hour with Curious George at 10 a.m. in the 1st Floor Fireplace Lounge; EMU Football convoy continental breakfast from 10 to 11 a.m. in the University Information Center, followed by convoy departing at 11 a.m. from Student Center parking lot to Ford Field for the EMU vs. Navy football game; and Saturday Night Life from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. throughout the building, featuring live musical performances by Fallswaydown and Penumbrae, live band karaoke, performances by Eastern Idol contest winners, interactive games, activities and more.
