First Phase of Fact-Finding Proceeding Awaiting Decision
YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University and the EMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), representing its faculty, completed the first phase of their fact-finding hearing, Tuesday, Dec. 19.
The parties now await a decision on the universities that the fact finder considers sufficiently comparable to EMU for benchmarking future wages and benefits of Eastern’s faculty. The fact finder’s decision is expected on or before Jan. 2, 2007.
Upon receipt of the fact finder’s decision, the parties will prepare for a hearing on the outstanding wage and benefit issues. That hearing will reconvene Feb. 13, and continue Feb. 20-21 and March 19-20. A fact finder’s decision is not expected before late spring, but would not be necessary should the parties reach an agreement earlier.
“EMU remains hopeful that the matter will be resolved earlier and we are awaiting a response from the EMU-AAUP to the University’s latest compromise offer of settlement,” said Donald Loppnow, provost and vice president for academic affairs.
The parties had an informal discussion earlier this month, following which the University extended another formal offer of settlement.
“The University and EMU-AAUP plan to meet again in early January 2007. We are hopeful the matter will be resolved at that time,” said Loppnow.
