YPSILANTI - Members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 1666 at Eastern Michigan University overwhelmingly approved a new contract May 9, 2000.

The contract is the result of nearly 11 months of effort by Eastern Michigan and the AFSCME bargaining team to address areas of mutual concern.

According to the new contract, employees at pay grades 20 and below will receive a 3 percent wage increase during the first year and those at pay grades 21 and above (primarily skilled tradesmen) will get a 3.5 percent increase.

The pay raise would be effective as of the date ratified and the University will give 1/2 of the value of the pay raise retroactively back to July 1, 1999, as a lump sum.

A second year pay increase of 3.5 percent increase for pay grades 20 and below and 4 percent for pay grades 21 and above, will be effective July 1, 2000.

During the third year of the contract, there will be a 3.5 percent increase for pay grades 20 and below and a 4.5 percent increase for pay grades 21 and above.

Local 1666 has 210 employees, representing food service, maintenance and custodial workers, in AFSCME, which is affiliated with the AFL-CIO.
