YPSILANTI - The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents approved
a 6.25 percent increase in room and board rates at its regular meeting June
25. The cost increase for the academic year will amount to $329 and is effective
fall 2002.
The standard 20-meal, double occupancy room will cost $5,597.
Single-occupancy room and board rates will be $7,151 and $6,118 for the Towers.
Rates for the new residence hall, The Village, were set at $4,463.
The increase will enable housing and dining services to meet debt payment obligations; fund the 2002-03 maintenance and renovation plan; maintain the current level of service and provide enhanced dining services options. This is the first time in the past 12 years that EMUs rate increase has been above the state average for public institutions.
The average room and board rate increase among state institutions is 5.5 percent,
with increases ranging from 3.5 percent to 9 percent.
Eastern Michigan currently has 15 residence halls and 650 apartments. More than
4,300 students will live in university residence halls and apartments for the
2002-2003 academic year.
