YPSILANTI - Courses approved by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be available for the first time through,the new online initiative of Eastern Michigan University (EMU). EMU's OSHA >Training Institute will begin offering the online courses in November 2000.

"Proven online technologies enable us to provide unprecedented access for manufacturing and construction workers to improve their skills and make workplaces safer," said Ed Goldberg, Ph.D., senior managing director of

"EMUWorldWide allows us to bring customer commitment and excellence in training to the online environment," explained Walter D. Di Mantova, director of the Centers for Corporate Training. "Our goal at the OSHA Training Institute - Motor City Education Center is to help create safe working environments through our high-quality training programs in health and safety," he added.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 25 million workers in the manufacturing and construction industries. "We will be able to reach even more of the workers and managers who most need this OSHA training," Di Mantova continued.

The OSHA Training Institute at EMU is one of just 12 official education centers established by the U.S. Department of Labor. It was selected six years ago in a national competition among other colleges and universities to meet the increasing need for OSHA approved courses.

The Motor City Education Center offers all of the approved OSHA courses both online and in traditional face-to-face settings. Courses include: Ergonomics; Hazardous Materials; Machinery and Machine Guarding Standards; Permit-Required Confined Space Entry; Electrical Standards; General Industry Standards; Construction Industry Standards; Industrial Hygiene; and Collateral Duty.
