Pencils, crayons, books, mittens and first aid kits needed

YPSILANTI &emdash; The Office for Alumni Relations and the Department of Military Science at Eastern Michigan University have teamed up to collect school supplies and mittens for the AmericaReads program during EMU's Sesquicentennial celebration.

The drive, which runs through April, needs supplies such as pencils, glue, paint brushes, markers, tape, paper, mittens, crayons, books, first aid kits, finger paints, paper plates, craft items and stencils. Items can be dropped off in the Office of Alumni Relations, 13 Welch Hall, or the Department of Military Science, 18 Roosevelt Hall, or at the information desk in McKenny Union.

"AmericaReads is important to the youth in our community and hopefully the program's success will enable many more children to fully participate in the college experience," said Vicki Reaume Mushisky, director of alumni relations.

AmericaReads began at Eastern Michigan in 1997 and is an opportunity for college students to develop mentoring relationships with children. Eastern's program is unique because the tutoring of children is done where they live and not at the schools, Mushisky said.
