YPSILANTI -The 10th Annual Applegate Golf Invitational, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28, is the grand finale for this popular fund-raising event. Named for James R. Applegate, a 1967 graduate and current vice president for golf development, Florida Panthers Holdings, Inc., the scramble benefits Eastern Michigan University's intercollegiate golf endowments. Registration begins at 11 a.m. at the Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti.

The event grew from Applegate's experience as a student-athlete and his desire to give something back to his alma mater. "Participating on the EMU Golf Team has been a life-long memory that I would never trade," he said. His ongoing commitment, along with other individual and corporate sponsors, has made a significant impact on EMU's golf teams.

Past invitationals have helped grow the men's combined endowment value to more than $300,000, and have helped fund opportunities such as the men's team trip to Hawaii. Recently, the invitational began benefiting the women's golf team through the Shirley G. Sport Endowment, which is valued at just over $20,000. Spork, a 1949 EMU graduate, founded the Ladies Professional Golf Association and was the first female inducted into EMU's Athletic Hall of Fame.

Sponsored by the Eastern Michigan University Foundation, the event also honors the EMU alumni golfer of the year. This year's honor goes to Jerry Heiss.

This year, an expanded silent auction will offer numerous items including exclusive Florida golf packages, Red Wing memorabilia, golf equipment and travel packages.

Cost for the invitational, which includes lunch, 18 holes of golf, cart, prizes, gifts, beverages on the course, dinner and a contribution to the endowments, is $200 per person. A $50 cost per person includes the social hour and dinner. Also available are Hole Sponsorships at $250, Range Sponsorships at $500, and other sponsorships. Corporate advertising on GPS Course Management Modules is available on all carts at the Eagle Crest Golf Club.
