National Publication Recognizes EMU as “Best Tuition Value”

YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University is one of only two Mid-American Conference (MAC) schools named a “Best Value for the Tuition Dollar” by “The Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges 2004” (Kaplan Publishing).

The other MAC school was Miami University (Ohio).

EMU also was one of only two Michigan schools to make the list. The University of Michigan – Ann Arbor also was cited. Among EMU’s peer institutions, only the University of Delaware made the list.

Authors Trent Anderson and Seppy Basili surveyed high school guidance counselors who named EMU a best value institution by weighing the cost against the quality of education.

“Eastern Michigan is truly a bargain. It’s a gem for students. Our University is affordable and very diverse with students from more than 100 foreign countries. No where else at any public university can you get small class instruction for such a low cost. They (the authors) are just verifying what we have been saying for a long time,” said Courtney McAnuff, vice president for enrollment services at EMU.

The second annual college guide publishes the results from a national telephone survey of public, private and Catholic high school guidance counselors from 328 institutions. In addition to statistical information, guidance counselors provided their insights about the colleges and universities with which they were most familiar. The guide is free of paid advertising from the profiled schools.

The survey was conducted by Market Measurement, a national market research firm that utilized a random sample of U.S. high schools obtained from Dun & Bradstreet. The guide is available in bookstores for $20.

Other institutions on the list are Arizona State University, Indiana University – Bloomington, Auburn University (Ala.), Florida State University, Duke University (N.C.) and Purdue University – West Lafayette (Ind.).

Eastern Michigan University is a public comprehensive metropolitan university that offers
programs in the arts, sciences and professions. EMU prepares students with the intellectual skills
and practical experiences to succeed in their careers and lives, and to be better citizens.
