EMU'S Walk For Women's Athletics
Tops $30,000 GOAL
YPSILANTI - Several small steps for health have netted Eastern Michigan University $32,000 for athletic scholarships, thanks to the
University's Second Annual Walk for Women?s Athletics, May 10.
The event, which took place at EMU?s Rynearson Stadium and Convocation Center, attracted 340 walkers and nine major community sponsors.
"This was a wonderful event. We exceeded our $30,000 goal and donations are still coming in,"
said Anna Schmitt Reichert, director of
development for athletics. "The support from both the university and the community really helped us to top our goal."
"The money raised will be used for women athletes who need fifth-year aid,"
said Carole Huston, senior associate athletics director at EMU.
"We currently have more than 250 women athletes, so scholarships are crucial."
Individual walkers raised $14,750. Corporate sponsors donated more than $15,000 and numerous gifts-in-kind. Sponsors included Meijer, Domino's
Pizza, The Ann Arbor News, The Cottage Inn Cafe, Phoenix Contractors, Coca Cola, St. Joseph Mercy Health System, the Ypsilanti office of the
Bank of Ann Arbor and MC Sports.
EMU has 12 women's sports: basketball, softball, track, cross-country, volleyball, rowing, golf, soccer, tennis, gymnastics, swimming and
