EMU WOMEN'S COMMISSION NAMES SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

YPSILANTI - The Eastern Michigan University Women's Commission recently awarded six scholarships to outstanding students. This year's scholarships are given in honor of Joanne M. Burns, former Women's Commission member and chair, who retired from EMU's career services office as the career planning manager in 1999.

Scholarship recipients must have a 3.0 GPA as a graduate, or a 2.5 GPA as an undergraduate; demonstrate financial need; have at least five years of interrupted study between high school graduation and their current status; and/or be pursuing a non-traditional field of study. Awards range from $400-$2,000.

The awardees for 2000/2001 are:

oBetty Brandon, of Jackson, majoring in engineering management.

oDana Carlson, of Livonia, majoring in graphic design.

oCynthia Helberg, of Ann Arbor, is majoring in biology.

oCorinne Sikorski, of Ypsilanti, who's working toward a teacher's certification for secondary education in geography and biology.

oJulia Smith, of Tecumseh, who is pursuing a degree in teaching Spanish with art and English minors.

oCharlotte Tillerson, of Detroit, majoring in special education.
