EMU students receive Women in
Communications scholarships
YPSILANTI - Eastern Michigan University's Lauren LaLonde of Pinckney
and Christina Zavicar of Allen Park are the recipients of 2003 Outstanding Student
Awards, given by the Detroit chapter of Women in Communications (WIC).
LaLonde and Zavicar each received monetary honorariums at the Matrix Awards
recently in Troy.
Recipients are judged by stated career focus, writing samples, grades, job
or intern experience, activities and letters of recommendation.
"We try to identify the top women majoring at Michigan colleges and universities,"
said Marcia Danner, Vice President of Student Affairs for the Detroit Chapter
of WIC. "We're pleased with the caliber of this year's recipients. Their
drive and motivation really caught our attention."
The Detroit chapter of WIC, founded in 1938, is a professional organization
that promotes the advancement of women in all fields of communications. It brings
together women in journalism, public relations, advertising, graphic design
and related areas of the communications field.
Eastern Michigan University is a public comprehensive, metropolitan university
that offers programs in the arts, sciences and professions. EMU prepares students
with the intellectual skills and practical experiences to succeed in their careers
and lives, and to be better citizens.
