EMU students receive Women in Communications scholarships

YPSILANTI - Eastern Michigan University's Lauren LaLonde of Pinckney and Christina Zavicar of Allen Park are the recipients of 2003 Outstanding Student Awards, given by the Detroit chapter of Women in Communications (WIC).

LaLonde and Zavicar each received monetary honorariums at the Matrix Awards recently in Troy.

Recipients are judged by stated career focus, writing samples, grades, job or intern experience, activities and letters of recommendation.

"We try to identify the top women majoring at Michigan colleges and universities," said Marcia Danner, Vice President of Student Affairs for the Detroit Chapter of WIC. "We're pleased with the caliber of this year's recipients. Their drive and motivation really caught our attention."

The Detroit chapter of WIC, founded in 1938, is a professional organization that promotes the advancement of women in all fields of communications. It brings together women in journalism, public relations, advertising, graphic design and related areas of the communications field.

Eastern Michigan University is a public comprehensive, metropolitan university that offers programs in the arts, sciences and professions. EMU prepares students with the intellectual skills and practical experiences to succeed in their careers and lives, and to be better citizens.
