EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY'S FIRST-EVER
WALK FOR WOMEN'S ATHLETICS SET FOR SEPT. 29
YPSILANTI - The women athletes at Eastern Michigan University need your help.
Don't worry. No one is going to ask you to step in and take a free shot or block a goal. Instead, they need your contributions for much-needed scholarships and program costs.
By participating in the first-ever Walk for Women's Athletics, Saturday, Sept. 29, at EMU's Convocation Center, 799 N. Hewitt Road, you can make a huge difference in their lives both on and off the court.
It's simple. Teams are forming now. Find at least five friends or co-workers who would like to get out in the fresh air, get some exercise, enjoy each other's company and raise some money for the female athletes at EMU.
Chaired by EMU's first lady, Pam Kirkpatrick, and Ypsilanti Mayor Cheryl Farmer, the Walk is organized on a team concept. Team captains are recruited from the EMU athletic staff, coaches, community leaders, businesses, students, alumni and YOU. Captains recruit members for their teams. In turn, the captains and team members obtain pledges and donations for their participation in the Walk. Proceeds from the Walk will benefit Eastern Michigan's women's athletics and scholarship assistance.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to get some exercise in the company of friends and help support the women athletes at Eastern Michigan University," Kirkpatrick said. "We'd love to have you out there. It is easy to get involved and the good you will do is immeasurable."
Check-in begins at 9 a.m. at the Convocation Center. Participants will be able to visit the Health Fair sponsored by St. Joseph Mercy Health System and sponsor booths focusing on wellness and fitness.
"The Health Fair will have plenty of information on wellness," Kirkpatrick said. "Booths will be set up that will give all participants a chance to learn more ways to get and stay healthy. Our own University Health Services will be providing health screenings and demonstrations."
At 9:45 a.m., teams will assemble on the track at Rynearson Stadium. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. Team members can walk or jog for the 30 minutes before returning to the Convocation Center for a complimentary breakfast sponsored by Cottage Inn.
Corporations also are encouraged to sponsor the walk. There are varying levels of sponsorship available.
