October 2002 Update Eastern Michigan University's softball field project is progressing, with excavation currently underway. According to the contractor, ABC Paving, excavation was 80 percent completed at the end of September.
The actual playing fields and berm areas are also beginning to take shape as designed in the construction drawings. There has been continual watering on a daily basis to help control and minimize dust to the adjacent neighborhood.
Tree removal has been completed. Minimal disruption to the outlying buffer areas was accomplished. The University contracted with two companies to transplant evergreens from the softball field area to the perimeter property line along the most eastern border of the softball fields. The 15'-25' tall evergreens were transplanted to serve as privacy screens for several homes in the area.
The University also transplanted several large bushes and trees to the property line in order to save the bushes and to provide more privacy for the neighborhood.
The next phase will be the installation of the underground utilities - storm, sanitary, water and the electrical lines - for the softball field complex. This will take place in October.
Seeding of the fields is still anticipated to begin in late October as planned.
Next spring (2003), the fields will begin to take final form with fencing and light pole installation.
