Program Description
The Upward Bound program has three major components:
Academic Year Component
Upward Bound members receive the following services during the school year:
- Educational, career and personal assessments to assist in developing an individual support plan.
- Weekly study sessions with tutors to assist with homework.
- Monthly group meetings to provide educational, cultural and social enrichment.
- College preparation services including academic advising, free SAT and ACT tests, fee waivers for up to three college applications, assistance with college and financial aid applications, and the college selection process. Visits to college campuses are also taken.
Summer Academy
Upward Bound members receive the following services during the six-week summer component:
- Courses in core subjects strengthening academic skills and abilities during high school. Courses are taught in small classes, which allows for maximum interaction with teachers. Students also receive high school credit upon successful completion of these courses
- Paid internships designed to expose students to their chosen career field.
- A variety of academic, social and cultural activities planned to introduce members to new experiences that enhancing self-esteem, providing opportunities for personal growth and development, and building social skills.
- Field trips to colleges and universities and other places of interest.
- The opportunity to experience college life while living on EMU's campus.
Summer Bridge Scholarship Program
Seniors who graduate can qualify for a scholarship including tuition, books and room and board at EMU during the summer semester following high school graduation. Students also receive support services during the semester to help ease the transition and bridge the gap from high school to college.
The scholarship is valued at more than $2,000.
