Best Buddies

Best Buddies is an opportunity to develop a meaningful friendship with a person with an intellectual or developmental disability. Best Buddies is an international program that was initially designed to pair college students with people with disabilities. The program has now expanded to include middle school and high school chapters.

Best Buddies at EMU

VISION and Best Buddies work together to succesfully run this college chapter of Best Buddies at Eastern Michigan University. EMU students are matched with a buddy from the local community that is age 18 or over. This organization prides itself in forming meaningful and long-lasting friendships that benefit both people.

Requirements for Best Buddies

Be a full-time EMU student
Fill out an application online www.bestbuddiesonline.org
Come in for an interview to be matched up with a buddy
Communicate with your buddy at least once a week (phone, e-mail, text, facebook, letter, ect.)
See your buddy face-to-face at least twice a month
Fill out a buddy update once a month

Face-to-face activites can be as simple as watching a movie, having lunch at the student center, going grocery shopping, or taking a walk. Face-to-face activities also include our monthly chapter meetings where all members of EMU Best Buddies come together to have a little fun. Our biggest event of the year is the Best Buddies Ball held in March which is open to the entire campus as well as University of Michigan Best Buddies. Best Buddies also offers workshops each semester to educate the campus on different disabilities.
