Setting up Dreamweaver to use SFTP
(applies to pre-MX 2004 versions only)
Dreamweaver / Dreamweaver MX (prior to version 2004)
is normally set up to use File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
to send files to the server and download files from the server.
However, EMU now supports Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP).
Therefore, if you are using Dreamweaver and do not wish to upgrade
to version 2004, you will need to set up a "bridge" to
allow the program to access the new EMU servers. (While configuring
the bridge is straightforward, we do recommend using the most
recent version of Dreamweaver instead. To purchase a copy of
Dreamweaver MX 2004 for $99, click here
to visit the Computer Store web site. If you do not wish
to do this, follow the instructions below).
If you find this process difficult or you
run into problems, contact the Technical
Webmaster for assistance.
Please note that this process is essentially
the same for PC/Windows and Mac users.
1. Make sure your computer has the most recent
version of Java installed.
Go to this site: www.appgate.com/mindterm/download.php.
2. Download the bridge application from MindTerm
Go to this site: www.appgate.com/mindterm/download.php.
Click on the link that says "MindTerm application binaries"
to download the necessary files to your hard drive. (You may also
download the source code and documentation if you wish, but this
is not necessary to use the application.)
3. Launch the program
The .bin file will extract itself into a folder
on your desktop, probably called "mindterm_2.3.1-bin Folder."
Within this folder, there will be an icon titled "mindterm.jar."
Click on this icon to launch the application.
4. Open a terminal (SSH) connection to the server
You will see a prompt in the MindTerm box that
says "SSH Server/Alias." Enter the name of the server
you are trying to access; for example, webstage.emich.edu or www.emich.edu.
You will then be prompted for your username
and password. After you have successfully entered this information,
you will be sent to your root directory, which will end in another
prompt (either # or %). If you wish to change to another directory
under your username, you may do so using the "cd [directory
name]" command.
5. Create the bridge
Select the option "FTP to SFTP Bridge"
from the Plugins menu in MindTerm (top of the screen). You will
see a popup window with a "listen address" and a "listen
port." Leave these fields in the default settings (127.0.0.1
and 21), and click Enable. You may now minimize (but not
exit) MindTerm. MindTerm must continue to run for the bridge
to work. MindTerm will redirect all regular FTP connections to host
127.0.0.1 (usually referred to as localhost) to the server as SFTP
connections.
6. Upload or download your files
Once the bridge is set up and is active, you
can use any regular FTP client to connect to webstage. You will
need to tell the regular FTP client (in Dreamweaver, the FTP settings)
to connect to host 127.0.0.1.
Once you are finished with your file uploading/downloading,
you may quit MindTerm and Dreamweaver.
7. Technical Support at EMU
If you have followed all the steps above and
are still unable to set up your bridge to work with Dreamweaver,
contact the Technical
Webmaster for assistance.
Questions about this site should be referred
to the director of Web Communications.
