World College Fellowship Program
Winter 2005 Announcement
The World College is requesting applications for as many as six Fellowships for the Winter 2005. These fellowship opportunities are open to full time tenure track faculty. An intention of the fellowships is to provide seed money for innovative ideas with potential for long-term positive impact.
The deadline for submission of applications is October 15, 2004. The Fellowships are of two types.
Type One includes three fellowships which are targeted, as described below.
International Cultural Competence Institute Fellowship-ICCI Coordinator
Coordinate planning and implementation of the
program for the International Cultural
Competence Institute, 2005. This fellow will
be responsible for the following:
1. Convene a planning committee,
2. Help to identify program elements and providers,
3. Arrange for program providers,
4. Initiate call for participant applications,
5. Lead selection of appropriate mix of participants,
6. Coordinate communications among committee
members, University offices, program providers,
and participants,
7. Manage logistics for planning, program delivery,
and post institute follow-up activities,
8. Monitor the ICCI budget,
9. Manage evaluation of ICCI.
10. Hold two meetings with ICCI participants
during Fall to monitor projects.
This fellowship is awarded for .50 faculty
reassignment for the Winter term. The Fellow
will be expected to continue beyond the end
of Winter 2005 in order to oversee the implementation
of the International Cultural Competence Institute
during the Spring 2005 term and manage the evaluation
and complete the final report. (Contingent on
budget and World College priorities, this fellowship
may be extended.) Former ICCI participants are
strongly urged to apply.
Institutionalization of International Week
Coordinate and propose policies and procedures
which are targeted to infuse ideas and
activities concerning International Week throughout
the University. This Fellow will be
responsible for the following:
1. Examine activities and contributors
to previous International Weeks at EMU,
2. Work with previous and current International
Week planners to highlight activities,
3. Enlist the assistance of Deans, Department Heads and Faculty to extend International
Week activities into classes, department, or college events,
4. Engage the authority of upper administration
offices to promote International Week,
5. Work across divisions to extend hospitality
to international students and faculty,
6. Identify international faculty to participate
in the globalization of the University,
7. Construct an evaluation instrument for
use in evaluating International Week 2004
activities.
This fellowship is awarded for .25 faculty reassignment
for the Winter term. (Contingent on budget and
World College priorities, this fellowship may
be extended.)
International Grant-Writing
Fellowship
This Fellowship will focus on identifying
and applying to funding sources which
underwrite the cost of international research,
service, teaching, and faculty/student
exchange. This Fellow will be responsible
for the following:
1. Create a working file of potential
funding sources,
2. Establish World College communications
with selected sources,
3. Identify sources that match the interests
(current and potential) of EMU
individuals and
disseminating that information to those
individuals,
4. In consultation with the World College
Director, to select two to three
target grants and
write proposals (either individually or
in collaboration with other faculty).
This fellowship is awarded for .50 faculty
release for the Winter 2005 term.
(Contingent on budget and World College
priorities, this fellowship may be extended.)
Type Two includes up to three .25 reassignment
fellowships for Winter 2005.
These are Applicant Initiated Fellowships
in which the applicant proposes the idea,
the strategy,
and the manner in which the proposal goals
are to be accomplished.
Evaluation of Applications
Applications will be evaluated on the basis
of how well the applicant addresses the
following criteria in the proposal narrative
(3 to 4 pages, single spaced).
1. Interest in assuming a leadership
role in international programs/activities.
2. Applicant experience which is relevant
to proposed activities.
3. Relationship of project to applicant's
continued professional development plans.
4. Explanation of expected project impacts
on teaching, research,
and service (pertaining
to applicant and colleagues).
5. Support by applicant's department head
of applicant's involvement.
6. If this is an applicant initiated project,
a budget page should be included which
includes such elements
as travel, communications, supplies, etc.

INSTRUCTIONS
FOR NARRATIVE AND BUDGET PAGE
Provide a narrative of no
more than 3-4 pages in which you summarize
the activities you intend to undertake
with release time from the World College. Explain
how your proposed activities meet the
criteria for the Fellowship Program (described
in Evaluation of Applications section
above). If you are applying
to carry out a new project (as opposed
to a type one project), provide a one-page
budget. In this budget, estimate
any costs that you anticipate incurring
in bringing the project to completion
(e.g., travel, communications, supplies,
etc.).
