Grant Information
for
Faculty and Staff
As
a part of the World College's mission to encourage internationalization
of the University and its programs, competitive travel grants
are awarded. Special consideration will be given to those who
have not received a travel grant previously. The travel grants
are targeted for full-time EMU faculty and staff members. The
awards provide financial assistance for Travel Abroad to
engage in professional activities which have international components.
Instruction, research, or service activities are eligible for
awards as long as they contain the likelihood of contributing
to the international expertise of the faculty/staff member and/or
extending the international capacities of the University. Within
30 days of travel completion a brief report must be submitted
to the World College along with a brief abstract of the project/activity
suitable for publication.
Application
Procedure
There are three application/award cycles during the academic year. The application deadline for the next cycle is October 2008.
The
World College Travel Grant Committee will review applications
and decide on awards within two weeks of the deadline dates listed
above. An application for a World College Travel Grant should
include the information listed below:
1. A trip itinerary, which identifies departure and return
dates and a calendar of planned destinations and professional
activities.
2.
A concise rationale for the support request, which explains
how the proposed travel and activities will contribute to the
faculty member's international expertise and/or the internationalization
of the University and its programs. Teaching, research, and public
service are all valued at Eastern Michigan University and are
elements of faculty/staff performance evaluations. When any of
these activities occur in an international venue they are potentially
supportable under the World College travel grant policy. Service
often leads to more comprehensive contacts/linkages which can
be beneficial to the individual and Eastern Michigan University.
Applicants are advised to review the information supplied below
in reference to support Levels One, Two, and Three, for guidance
on the proposal development. A budget, which itemizes all expected
project costs, shows other expected sources of support, and specifies
the amount requested from the World College. Applicants should
obtain their department head's signature on their applications
before sending them to the World College.

Levels
of Support
There are two levels of support in
the World College Travel Grant Program. The award of each of these
is dependent upon the program priorities in the World College,
availability of funds, the comprehensiveness of the proposal,
and the number of high quality applications. The following are
some examples of travel-linked activities, which can be supported
by the Travel Grant Program:
-
Creation
of a new course with substantial international content
-
Addition
of substantial international components to an existing course
-
Creation
of a new international program of study
-
Significant
revision of an existing international program of study
-
Dissemination
or publication of an article, book, or presentation with substantial
international content (For example: travel to consult with international
co-authors or publishing houses)
-
Research
with substantial international content, perhaps in partnership
with colleagues in another country
-
Development
of instructional, research, creative, and/or service linkages
between EMU and a foreign institution
-
Travel
related to submission of a grant proposal which has substantial
international focus and involves foreign collaboration
Level One: Grants of $250 to support faculty/staff who propose
travel and engage in activities which are likely to increase their
international expertise and disseminate their internationally
focused work. (For example: organize a professional meeting or
present the results of their scholarly or creative work in an
international venue).
Level Two: Grants of $500 to support faculty/staff who propose
travel and activities which contribute substantially to the creation
or revision of the international content of EMU courses and programs
in addition to initiating collaborative teaching, research, creative,
or service relationships between EMU personnel and foreign institution
personnel.
If additional World College funding becomes available, these amounts
may be re-negotiated.
