Perhaps one of most important undertakings in life for any individual contemplating a career in international business is deciding which field and job is the most suitable and satisfying while offering a respectable income with growth potential.
To help existing and future international business personnel successfully complete this crucial task, we have compiled an easy-to-use checklist based on current thinking and practice in the Human Resource Development field.
The checklist is comprised of four areas:
- CAREER PLANNING
- JOB OUTLOOK
- JOB SEARCH
- JOB POSTINGS
CAREER PLANNING
This section is designed to help users select the career(s) for which they are best suited and qualified by providing information and suggestions regarding 1) career assessment, i.e., showing ways to determine which skills and knowledge users possess that correspond to certain careers in business and other fields; 2) job titles describing, among other things, their requirements and duties; and 3) education and/or training, giving This is, perhaps, the most important undertaking of the three sections since its will determine whether the job seeker will find employment and be successful.
CAREER PLANNING
This is the first area of the checklist and is designed to help future professionals ascertain and decide for which fields of work they are most interested and qualified. It will provide suggestions and sources with which future workers can assess their skills and knowledge for certain fields of work. It is the most important phase since it will influence all subsequent ones. Once career seekers complete it, they are ready to go on to the phase which is to determine which fields hold opportunities in the future.
JOB OUTLOOK
This section of the checklist furnishes information about trends in the job market, at home and abroad, in the next decade. It informs where employment will be in the future and in which fields. All job seekers know that this data is very important in an increasingly competitive and volatile global work place since it can lead to either employment or unemployment.
JOB SEARCH
This is an equally important section since it furnishes users with the necessary tools that lead directly to employment. This section provides information on 1) resume and cover letter-writing, indicating ones are the most effective and appropriate for the user; 2) job information, citing printed and electronic sources and ways of finding and applying for jobs as well as data on companies and other employment entities; 3) interviewing and which questions and techniques are the most useful; and 4) salary and job negotiation and which strategies are the most effective.
JOB POSTINGS
This section will provide job postings from companies or other employment entities, both public and private, which will describe, as much as possible, the position (e.g., company name, location, job title and type, qualifications, duties, contact person or division, etc.) and types of personnel they are seeking. In the future, it will permit job seekers to send resumes and cover letters to prospective employers to communicate with them.
