Goals:
In accordance with both the mission statements from the University and the College of Arts and Sciences, the French section of the Department of World Languages (FLABS) teaches French for its inherent humanistic value and for the impact it has in contemporary society, bearing the National Standards in mind.
The French section of FLABS is committed to the following goals:
1. Offer courses based on the consistent development communication in interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes.
2. Offer a variety of courses that will provide students with a wide and profound knowledge of the cultural diversity which exists in the French-speaking world.
3. Offer courses in a manner that will allow students to participate actively in classroom and homework assignments while honing their linguistic skills and opening their horizons to new concepts, ideas, and cultures.
4. Offer students the opportunity to experience first-hand the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom (internships, immersion program in France, and eventually finding a job using French).
5. Allow students to grow intellectually while stressing commitment to excellence in teaching, critical thinking, effective communication, and public service.
6. Offer courses which help students connect with other fields of study.
7. Offer courses that will equip students to become active and productive participants in their community after they graduate.
Programs:
Group Major in Language and
International Trade French (LGIT
FRNH)
Depending on initial placement, students may need to take up to 16 additional
credit hours of 100- and 200-level classes in the language before they
can begin courses required in the major.
The major in language and international trade is designed to integrate
the study of modern World languages and cultures with preparation in the
field of international business. The major objective of the program is to
provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to
function in a World environment and in professional dealings with business
people and clients who speak World languages. Students completing
this group major will have met the major and minor requirements for
graduation. No outside minor is needed.
Qualified students in French may have the option of participating in a
cooperative work exchange in an area of the world where French is spoken.
French Major (FRNH)
Depending on initial placement, students may need to take up to 16 additional
credit hours of 100- and 200-level classes in the language before they
can begin courses required in the major.
It is recommended that students specializing in French, or planning
to continue with graduate work, carry their undergraduate study beyond
the minimum requirements listed below. Many graduate schools require
additional course work in literature.
French Major (FRNT)
Secondary Teacher Certification
Depending on initial placement, students may need to take up to 16 additional
credit hours of 100- and 200-level classes in the language before they
can begin courses required in the major.
Successful completion of this course of studies, in the context of other
program requirements, qualifies the student for recommendation for certi-
fication for the Michigan Department of Education Secondary Provisional
Certificate endorsed in French, certification code FA, and, depending on
the minor selected, an additional endorsement. The Michigan Test for
Teacher Certification (MTTC) covering this field is #23, "French."
French Language and Literature
Minor (FRLL)
The French Language and Literature Minor gives you a basic functional proficiency in the French language, an overall view of French literature from the Middle Ages to the present, and a basis for further study.
French Language Minor (FRL)
The French Language Minor gives you a sound functional proficiency in French and a basis for further study.
French Literature Minor (FRT)
The French Literature Minor gives you an overall view of French literature from the Middle Ages to the present, some details on specific areas, and a basis for further study.
Business French Minor (FRNB)
The Business French Minor gives you a sound functional proficiency in the language and a grasp of business practices in the French-speaking world.
French Language Minor (FRLT)
Elementary, Secondary, K-12, Special Education-Elementary and Special
Education-Secondary Teacher Certification
Successful completion of this minor, in the context of other program requirements,
qualifies the student for recommendation for endorsement in
French, certification code FA. The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification
MTTC) covering this field is #23, "French."
MASTER OF ARTS in World
Language - French (FRNH)
The goal of the master of arts in World language program is to bring candidates
to a superior level of proficiency in the chosen World language as de-
fined by the Interagency Language Roundtable/American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ILR/ACTFL) scale, as well as to provide
broad knowledge of the geography and cultures of the regions where the
target language is spoken, and to improve overall teaching effectiveness.
