The K-12 teaching major and the secondary teaching major and minor in French


Students may complete a K-12 teaching major, a secondary teaching major, or a secondary teaching minor in French. All major and minor programs of study include coursework designed to help students to develop their language proficiency as well as their knowledge of francophone history, culture, and literature. In order to enhance their language skills and experience life in the target culture, majors and minors must participate in an approved study abroad experience lasting at least six weeks. The Michigan Standards for Teacher Certification also require that majors and minors complete a World language methods course.

 

MAJOR for students seeking Secondary (7-12)  OR K-12 teacher certification in FRENCH

MINOR for students seeking Secondary (7-12) certification  only in FRENCH

Group I: Required Language Development Courses

Students seeking a major in French as part of a secondary or K-12 teaching certificate must complete the following four required courses (12 credits).

FRNH444      Advanced French Conversation

Group I: Required Language Development Courses

Students seeking a minor in French as part of a secondary (7-12) certificate must complete the following four required courses (12 credits).

Group II: Required Literature Courses

Students seeking a major in French as part of a secondary or K-12 teaching certificate must complete the following  two required,  3-credit literary survey  courses (6 credits).

FRNH342   Survey of French Literature

Group II: Required Literature Courses

Students seeking a minor in French as part of a secondary (7-12) certificate must complete ONE of the following required courses (3 credits).

Group III:  Restricted Civilization and Culture Courses

Students seeking a major in French as part of a secondary or K-12 teaching certificate must complete an additional 6 credits in French culture and civilization, selected from among the following four courses.

FRNH450    French Civilization in Film

FRNH466    French Speaking Cultures of the World

FRNH467    French Culture and Civilization

FRNH476   20th Century French  Civilization

Group III:  Restricted Civilization and Culture Courses

Students seeking a minor in French as part of a secondary (7-12) certificate must complete ONE of the following required courses (3 credits).

FRNH466     French Speaking Cultures of the World

FRNH467     French Culture and Civilization

FRNH476    20th Century French Civilization

Group IV: Required Immersion Experience

Students seeking a major in French as part of a secondary or K-12 teaching certificate must complete an additional 6-credit, 6-week cultural and linguistic immersion experience.

Group IV: Required Immersion Experience

Students seeking a minor in French as part of a secondary teaching certificate must complete an additional 6-credit, 6-week cultural and linguistic immersion experience.

Group V: Required Capstone Senior Seminar

Students seeking K-12 certification in French are required to complete a 3-credit senior capstone seminar that focuses on French language, linguistics, cultures, and literatures of the French-speaking countries.

Note:  Majors seeking secondary certification must take FLAN 411.  Majors seeking K-12 certification must take FLAN 411 and FLAN 412.

Note:  Minors seeking secondary certification must take FLAN 411. 

MAJOR =  33 credits
MINOR =  24 credits
