
Scholarships and Financial Aid
Department of World Languages Scholarships. (To be considered, students must 1) meet the criteria below for each award sought, 2) fill out the scholarship application form, available in 219 Alexander, and 3)obtain 2 letters of recommendation (LORs) from EMU professors with whom the applicant has studied (one must be from a professor of World Languages), letters which must be in a sealed envelope with the professor's signature written across the envelope's flaps), submitting both application and LORs to the Department of World Languages, 219 Alexander Music Building, by March 4, 2011. Awards will be announced at the departmental Awards ceremony in April and funds are available Summer 2011 through Spring 2012. The amounts listed below are for Spring 2010-Spring 2011, and new award amounts will be announced Winter Semester 2011.)
The J. Henry Owens Endowed Scholarship - $142.00
Applicants must be declared French majors and hold a minimum 2.5 GPA overall and a minimum 3.0 overall in French. They must have successfully completed two courses in French at the 3rd- year level by the end of the previous fall semester.
The R. Clyde Ford Endowed Scholarship - $389.00
Applicants must have declared a major in a World Language and hold Senior standing at the time of application. While the donor has not indicated a minimum GPA, we give clear preference to the eligible student with the highest overall average. The possibility exists of combining this award with the J. Henry Owens award if a candidate emerges who meets the separate criteria for both awards (as stipulated above).
The Paul Adam Kozma Endowed Scholarship - $2,935.00
Applicants must: 1) be in their Junior or Senior year, 2) be declared majors in EMU's Language and International Trade (L.I.T.) Program, and 3) be able to demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to L.I.T. majors concentrating in French, but students studying other languages--German, Japanese, and Spanish--, will be considered as well.
Florentine O. and Egbert R. Isbell Endowed Scholarship for German - $2,957.00
Student must be declared German language major or German teaching major. The award is based on academic achievement and financial need to study abroad.
John R. Hubbard Memorial Endowed Scholarship -$624.00
Purpose of scholarship is to provide aid for study abroad in target language, preference given to students of German. Applicants must document need for financial aid by submitting a FASFA(available online), by March 4th, complete the scholarship application form, obtain two letters of recommendation from professors, write a letter in target language stating reasons for applying for study abroad. This award requires a minimum GPA 3.0 and two years at EMU or equivalent language proficiency.
Marie Schultz Rohde Memorial Endowed Scholarship for German -$621.00
Student must be a declared German language major or minor, in junior year, and must wish to study abroad. This award requires a 2.5 overall GPA and 3.0 GPA in all German courses at EMU.
German Scholarship -$600.00
The applicant must be a student of German and must participate in EMU's German Summer Program at Heinrich-Heine University, DÜsseldorf or Justus Liebig University, Giessen, Germany. The scholarship itself is based on need and merit.
Foreign Language Study Abroad Scholarship - $1,000.00
To provide financial support for students who study non-English language and culture in the country of the target language. The award is to be made regularly, at least annually, to a student or students chosen by the Department of World Languages or its successor.
Japanese School of Detroit Endowed Scholarship - $500.00
The student must be an EMU undergraduate majoring in Japanese and whose GPA is 3.0 or above. S/he must be registered for the approved EMU Academic Study Abroad program in Japan. Student must demonstrate financial need.
