Admission Requirements

• Minimum undergraduate GPA: 2.75.
• Must hold state credentials to teach in public schools.
• Must have one year of college-level study of a foreign language. Conditional admission may be granted to candidates that do not meet the foreign language requirement with the proviso that they complete 2 semesters of college-level foreign language study, earning a grade of C or better, prior to graduation.


The following items must be submitted with your application to the Admissions Office:

• A completed application form. Please note that on the application, there is a space in which to enter the program code. In this space, enter TSLC for the Graduate Certificate/K~12 ESL Endorsement program.
• A statement of purpose. It should present the reasons for pursuing this Graduate Certificate/ESL Endorsement.
• Two letters of recommendation with proof of classroom teaching experience (e.g., letter from employer/principal/supervisor).
• A copy of your Michigan (or other state) Teaching Certificate.
• Applicants must submit official transcripts showing one year (2 semesters) of college-level foreign language study (or complete this requirement during the program).

Review of Applications


The TESOL faculty reviews applications as they receive them. Prior to admission, the TESOL Advisor is ready to help you explore degree requirements and answer questions. Once admitted, the advisor helps you prepare a plan of study, approves program changes (including any transfer requests of course credits).
