K-12 ESL Endorsement Program
Eastern Michigan University
**Fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.**
This program enables you to earn not only the Graduate Certificate in TESOL, an EMU degree, but also the State of Michigan’s ESL Endorsement in approximately 24 months. Graduation from the Graduate Certificate Program allows teachers to count all of these credits towards the Master of Arts in TESOL at a later date.
A Brief Introduction to the Graduate Certificate Program
Eastern Michigan University is proud to have been the first university in the state to offer a program that leads to endorsement and was designed especially for pre K–12 teachers with English Language Learners (ELLs) in their classrooms. Our original graduate certificate program was developed in response to the many requests we received from public teachers to help them provide better instruction for the ELLs in their classes. Once the state recognized ESL as a specialization for endorsement, EMU revised its certificate program to support the state and national standards for this group of students and these content objectives.
ELLs are a valuable resource for fostering multi-cultural as well as global awareness and tolerance. They enrich the breadth and perspective of the educational experience for everyone in the educational setting. They also present special challenges to those that teach and study in this environment. What are those issues? How can teachers and others skillfully work with ELLs in the classroom? What English language and pedagogical skills do teachers need to help these students develop their cognitive academic abilities? ELLs require - and deserve - the school’s best efforts to facilitate their continued progress towards mastering English, the language through which other subjects are taught, while they master the content objectives of those subjects.
Eastern’s Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) was crafted with just these goals in mind.
