EMU TESOL Section Mission Statement

EMU programs that educate teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) are committed to preparing individuals to teach English in a variety of local and international settings. Graduates of these programs will possess superior language competency, enhanced cross-cultural and intercultural awareness, effective pedagogical and assessment skills, and a strong sense of professionalism.

We pride ourselves on the rich diversity of our faculty and students, and on our years of experience in ESOL teacher education. Established in 1980, the MA TESOL program has been sending its graduates all over the world. Graduates of the program currently teach in at least 20 different states across U.S.A. and in more than 30 countries and regions worldwide. In the last 27 years, the program has continued its innovation first by adding a TESL Graduate Certificate program for certified teachers in pursuit of the state's ESL endorsement, and recently a new Undergarduate TESOL Minor program. Providing bridges between current research/theory and best practices, these three programs prepare students to become exemplary classroom teachers committed to continued professional development in the TESOL field. We are very proud that graduates of our programs are empowered with the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to teach English to diverse student populations in a variety of educational contexts locally and internationally, in a manner marked by professional innovation and cross cultural sensitivity.

Whether you're a college graduate interested in working with English language learners, an experienced teacher interested in refining your teaching skills, or a career changer interested in doing something more meaningful, we have a program tailored to meet your needs. We welcome inquires. For a caring and practical learning experience of TESOL Teacher education first ... the choice is EMU!
