Admission Requirements for Domestic Students
• Minimum undergraduate GPA: 2.75.
• To be admitted to the MA TESOL program, an applicant must apply to the Graduate School.
• No particular undergraduate major is required for admission to this program.
• The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for the program.
• Native-speakers of English must have one year of college-level study of a foreign language, with a grade of C or better.
• Conditional admission may be granted to candidates that do not meet the foreign language requirement with the proviso that they complete 2 semesters of college- level foreign language study, earning a grade of C or better, prior to graduation.
Admission Requirements for International Students
• Minimum undergraduate GPA: 2.75.
• To be admitted to the MA TESOL program, an applicant must apply to the Graduate School.
• No particular undergraduate major is required for admission to this program.
• The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for the program.
• Non-native speakers of English must present a recent (no older than one year) TOEFL or IELTS test score showing English language proficiency.
* a TOEFL 92 (iBT); Reading 24, Writing 24, Speaking 22 and Listening 22.
* an IELTS 7 for every section.
• There is no conditional admission on the basis of English proficiency.

• To have an application form mailed to you, contact the Admissions Office, by phoning from inside the U.S.A. 734-487-3400 or 800/GO-TO-EMU, or from outside the U.S.A. 734-487-0205.
The following items must be submitted with your application to the Admissions Office:
• A completed application form. (Note: The program code for the M.A. in TESOL is TSL-MA.)
• A statement of purpose. It should present the reasons for your interest in pursuing a Master of Arts degree in TESOL. Why do you want to become an ESOL teacher? What are your ideas about how second/foreign languages are learned and how they should be taught? What is the strength of your commitment to undertaking a rigorous MA program in TESOL? Please include any additional information that you think is relevant to our consideration of your application.
• Two recommendations on the form provided. Please fill out the first section of the form before giving it to your recommenders. Each recommender should complete the form and a letter and then seal them in an envelope, which they can either return to you to include in your application packet OR mail directly to the EMU Admissions Office at the address listed at the beginning of this section.
• Non-native speakers of English must submit recent (no older than one year) official test scores showing English language proficiency.
• Official transcripts of undergraduate studies.

Application Deadlines
The MA-TESOL program reviews all completed applications twice a year: April 1st for September admission & October 15th for January admission.
Please note that:
1. The Admissions Office takes at least 2 weeks to process applications before sending them to the program for consideration. Therefore, please submit applications at least 2 weeks in advance of our review dates.
2. After April 1st, applications will be considered on a space-available basis.
3. MA-TESOL deadlines are earlier than those stated for the university.
4. Admission is valid only for the semester stated. After that, the applicant must reapply.

| ESL Endorsement & Graduate Certificate in Teaching TESOL |

Teachers that are certified to teach in the state of Michigan and that wish to add the ESL endorsement to their state credentials may do so by completing the 22 credit hour Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (program code TSLC). This program enables them to develop the knowledge and skills needed to obtain the ESL add-on endorsement from the Michigan Department of Education. This program is offered through Continuing Education and is taught at the EMU Center in Livonia. Please note that this program starts anew every two years.
