Required TESOL Core Courses:
TSLN 500 Observation & Analysis of ESL Programs (1 cr hour)
Fall and Winter semesters. No pre-requisites.
Observations of ESL classes in varied contexts, and practice in using different types of observation instruments. Seminar topics focus on ESL classrooms, noting differences for ESL classrooms.
TSLN 501 Theoretical Foundations of Second Language Pedagogy (3 cr hours)
Fall semester. Pre-requisites: MA TESOL admission or Dept permission
Overview of the principal theories of language description, language learning and language use, with emphasis on those factors that affect second-language acquisition and learning.
TSLN 502 A Pedagogical Grammar and Phonology of ESL (4 cr hours)
Fall semester. Pre-requisites: MA TESOL admission or Dept permission
Examines the structure and sound systems of American English as it applies to the teaching and learning of English as a second language. Emphasizes practical aspects of usage.
TSLN 520 Foreign Language Testing and Evaluation (2 cr hours)
Winter semester. Pre-requisites: TSLN 501 or 525, and 502
Examines the role of testing; surveys types of tests; discusses the criteria of a good test; analyzes tasks that variously require listening, speaking, reading, writing and communicative competence; and provides practice in evaluating and constructing test items.
TSLN 530 TESOL Methods: Reading, Writing and Grammar (2 cr hours)
Winter term. Pre-requisites: TSLN 501 or 525, and 502; co-req TSLN 531
Examines content and methodology in teaching TESOL reading, writing and grammar to diverse groups of students. Students are expected to investigate different techniques, analyze them and research one area.
TSLN 531 TESOL Materials: Reading, Writing and Grammar (1 cr hour)
Winter term. Pre-requisites: TSLN 501 or 525, and 502; co-req TSLN 530
This class will provide students with opportunities to review, evaluate and adapt materials for use in teaching Reading, Writing and Grammar to ESOL learners. Students will gain facility in matching and adapting texts and materials to the needs of different kinds of ESOL learners.
TSLN 532 TESOL Methods: Listening, Speaking and Pronunciation (2 cr hours)
Spring term. Pre-requisites: TSLN 501 or 525, and 502; co-req TSLN 533
Examines content and methodology in teaching TESOL listening, speaking and pronunciation to diverse groups of students. Students are expected to investigate different techniques, analyze them and research one area.
TSLN 533 TESOL Materials: Listening, Speaking and Pronunciation (1 cr hour)
Spring term. Pre-requisites: TSLN 501 or 525, and 502; co-req TSLN 532

TSLN 688 TESOL Practicum; Community ESL Programs* (3 cr hours)
Summer term. Pre-requisites: TSLN 530 and 532
Supervised practical experience in TESOL appropriate to the student's intended teaching setting. With the guidance of a trained ESL teacher, the practicum student will select appropriate materials and techniques to develop the necessary skills in the learners, and will then apply them in classroom situations. Nota Bene: Four months prior to beginning the required student practicum, TSLN 688, students must have achieved a TOEFL iBT 92, MELAB 85 or IELTS 7 on each section.
TSLN 688 TESOL Practicum* (3 cr hours)
Summer, Fall, or Winter terms. Pre-requisites: TSLN 530 and 532

TSLN 694 TESOL Seminar (2 cr hours)
Fall term. Pre-requisites: TSLN 500, 501/525, 502, 530, 531, 532, and 533
Different topics are selected each semester for intensive study by advanced students. The course consists of review and discussion of contemporary issues in TESOL, based on research projects and review of the pertinent literature carried out by the student. Emphasis in seminar meetings on exchange of ideas and information developed in the research.
The MA Thesis Option:
Students can elect to write an MA thesis in conjunction with this program. If interested, students initiate this process through the TESOL Advisor during their first winter term.
TSLN 690 Thesis I (1 cr hour)
Usually spring-summer terms. Pre-requisite: Department permission.
Selection of topic and development of a comprehensive but focused annotated bibliography that provides the background, justification and significance for the research questions to be investigated and accompanies the submission of a preliminary proposal.
TSLN 691 Thesis II (2 cr hours)
Usually fall semester. Pre-requisite: TSLN 690 or Department Permission.
Development of a full-fledged, formal research proposal: the literature review underpinning the study and a detailed description of the research instruments and methods by which data will be collected and analyzed. Completed research forms for human subjects approval must be included.
TSLN 692 Thesis III (3 cr hours)
Usually winter semester. Pre-requisites: TSLN 690, 691
Execution of the research project and preparation of the thesis for final submission.
Cognates:
• Required: 6 credit hours of cognates from Linguistics.
• Generally, linguistics courses are offered in only fall and winter terms.
• Not all courses are offered every semester or even every year. Students should check with the English Department for times and prerequisites.
• Remember to seek approval from the TESOL Advisor before you register.
