| Master of Arts in TESOL Program Schedule When should you start the program? _________________________________________ Eastern Michigan University |
|---|
Students may start in Fall (September), Winter (January) or Spring (May) terms. However, because
some classes are not offered every semester, some schedules/tracks take longer to complete.
1. Fall (September) Start
• Possible for both domestic and international students.
• The shortest time and least expensive schedule/track (16 month program).
• Students maintain full-time status throughout program, except for summer term.

2. Winter (January) Start
• Possible for all students but not advisable for F-1 or J-1 students who need to maintain full-time
status in each fall and winter term (see note to international students below).
• Longer time (24 months) and for international students, a more expensive schedule because of F-1
visa regulations.
• Students maintain part-time status in most semesters and terms unless they add classes not required
on the program.
• TESOL courses must be taken in the sequence they are offered. Cognates and electives can be
taken throughout the program, when available.

Note to Students about Schedule Options:
Domestic Students: A Summer (late June/July) start may be possible in some years for domestic students. If interested,
contact the TESOL advisor.
If you are a domestic student, you can complete this degree in 16 months or you can follow a more leisurely schedule.
We strongly recommend the latter approach if you are planning on working while you pursue the MA in TESOL. The
Graduate School allows you up to 6 years to complete a master’s degree.
International Students: The F-1 and J-1 visas require that international students be enrolled full-time during their first
term of study and every Fall and Winter term. This means that if they start in a Spring (May), they need to take 8 credit
hours across spring-summer terms and then at least 8 credit hours in each Fall and Winter semester.
If international students start in Winter (January) they will have to pay for classes that do not count for their masters in
order to have enough credit hours to maintain their visa requirements in all Fall and Winter terms.
