Your son or daughter is about to embark on the experience of a lifetime through one of our study abroad programs. Our office is here to accompany them through every step of the process from application to program implementation, and we will be here to greet them on their safe return home.
Safety for participants of EMU study abroad programs is our first and most fundamental priority. We regularly monitor the safety and security conditions of our study abroad sites and itineraries, using U.S. State Department information along with other reliable sources. As members of the National Association of Foreign Student Advisors, we consult our national membership on issues impacting universities across the country regarding issues of safety. We monitor State Department Travel Alerts and Travel Warnings, and can cancel, alter or re-schedule programs if necessary.
If conditions warrant, and the University decides to cancel a specific program prior to its departure, students enrolled in that program will receive a full refund of all fees paid. If a program already underway must be canceled, the University will arrange to have all students enrolled in the program return home and will issue appropriate refunds to enrolled students.
If a program is not canceled and conditions warrant, we have the ability to alter the scheduled destinations and itineraries of specific programs to maximize safety and security while maintaining academic integrity. If a student wishes to withdraw from a program that is not canceled by the University, i.e. a program that is proceeding as scheduled or modified by changing conditions, the normal policy regarding withdrawals will be in effect. As we continue to monitor safety and security conditions for each of our programs, we will provide updated information to students.
We subscribe to the best practices for study abroad as laid out in "Responsible Study Abroad: Health and Safety Guidelines" published by by NAFSA: National Association of International Educators, the primary international organization of study abroad professionals, and other professional organizations dedicated to international education.
