Provost's Message
In this season of Thanksgiving, I want to thank all of you for everything you have been doing this semester. It has been a very challenging time, but as a community, we have all come together in support of EMU and Demarius Reed’s family, friends and teammates. I was very heartened by the way faculty and staff rose to the occasion on many different levels through these difficult days to assist, reassure, and comfort our bereaved and concerned.
Eastern seeks to renew Carnegie Community Engagement classification
Thanks to a project completed by EMU students in ACC 546 — Public and Nonprofit Sector Accounting—residents of Adrian, Tecumseh, Wixom and Ypsilanti can access a simpler, more understandable version of their respective city's annual financial reports. In Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula, students from EMU's Historic Preservation program work with the Leelanau Conservancy to preserve key buildings at the historic Campbell-DeYoung farm. In Ypsilanti, English as Second Language (ESL) students from Eastern perform community service for local organizations as part of "Helpy Hour" activities. Agencies receive free assistance while the students enhance their English language skills.
Grant helps EMU faculty revolutionize middle school history and geography lessons
In the classroom of the near future, 8th and 9th grade students won’t learn about historical events like the Civil War just by reading a textbook. They’ll use Graphic Information Systems (GIS) data mapping and visualization tools to better understand where, how and why the battles took place.
Meeting a community need: EMU prepares to launch Physician Assistant Program
With a growing population, aging baby boomers and influx of newly insured patients under the Affordable Care Act, demand for health care in the United States has never been higher. At the same time, there is a projected shortage of primary care doctors, since more physicians are entering specialty areas of medicine.
At your service: Parker Center among new academic advising initiatives
EMU students within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) who have not declared a major now have a convenient, one-stop resource for academic and career planning.
In June, Eastern opened the Francine Parker Advising Center, where students can meet with trained professional advisors without an appointment.

Degree Completion and
Retention Plan
Supporting student persistence and successful and timely graduation are central to EMU's academic mission. While EMU can point to a number of past and ongoing efforts that have been successful in fostering student success, the time is right for us to develop a comprehensive, coordinated plan that focuses campus-wide energy, attention and resources around improving our performance in these areas. The overarching goal of the Degree Completion/Retention (DCR) plan is effective execution of current efforts and outreach, and adding high impact programmatic enhancements. The plan will be discussed at the Board of Regents' meeting on December 10, 2013. I hope you are aware of and have taken advantage of the various ways to provide feedback to the draft plan.
