Holman Success Center Offers Enhanced and Expanded Services

holman study tablesThe Holman Success Center (HSC) continues to expand and enhance its service offerings to students.  As you may know, Eagle Study Tables are staffed by Holman Success Center staff and supported within the Halle Library space.  Eagle Study Tables "opened for business" last fall and have expanded hours significantly to meet demands this year. To date, attendance figures are nearly triple what they were last year at this time. By September 7th, the HSC had already scanned 10,127 hours of attendance from 732 separate students.

The Halle Library space represents an attractive and highly functional place for students to receive the support they need with access to drop-in tutoring, academic advising, and supplemental instruction. Students also receive extensive writing assistance from the Writing Center housed adjacent to the Study Table space.  A fresh redesign of the space featuring new, stylish and comfortable furniture with integrated power outlets for today's mobile student, has helped increase traffic in the space.  Freshly painted walls, professionally designed wall graphics and 46" high definition monitors rotating up-to-the-minute messaging help define the space.  Holman staff also created a "Bottles for Books" fund, which has enabled them to purchase several textbooks used in General Education course sections with high enrollment that students can use while they are in the study table area.  Bottle donations, cash, and textbook donations are accepted to support the program.

As the utilization of the HSC physical space has increased, so has HSC presence online and on social media sites.  Darcy Gifford and EMU’s Integrated Content team's complete overhaul of the HSC website provides a simple and clean looking resource intended to streamline students’ access to support services and their academic and career planning tools.  An automated appointment system, an integrated calendar, and one-click access to each service management tool all come together in a visually pleasing and mobile-friendly format.

Also easy to locate and follow are the links to HSC’s many Social Media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.

Concentrated efforts are being made each day to represent the best that Eastern Michigan has to offer in this space.  A small group of highly motivated graduate and undergraduate students continuously attend and document/post the activities and events going on in the HSC, in other support services offices, and in departments and venues across campus.  With a goal of providing timely, accurate, informative and relevant information to EMU students, this group’s efforts are resulting in some big gains in exposure.  EMU Athletics, The Office of Financial Aid, Student Body President Desmond Miller, EMU Campus Life, EMU Dining Services, The Academic Advising and Career Development Center, and even Swoop himself follow HC on social media channels.
