Provost's Update

Nov. 2014

Provost's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I wanted to update you on some of the activities taking place as a result of initiatives coming out of the Degree Completion and Retention Plan (DCR), specifically in the area of student support services. The Plan cites the need for improved academic advising and support services throughout the institution via key actions such as greater support for students who have not selected a major, enhanced communications with students, and implementation of online systems for audit/degree tracking, to include transfer and planning modules. With a record-setting incoming class in terms of number and quality for the second year in a row, it is more important than ever that student support services diversify their efforts to address the varied needs of this group of students, as well as expand services in general to accommodate a greater volume of students. Here are some updates on actions coming out of the Holman Success Center and the University Advising and Career Development Center (UACDC).  Updates on DCR initiatives will be included in each subsequent newsletter, and there will be a comprehensive update to the DCR by mid-December that will be posted on the DCR web site

As you may be aware, President Martin is co-chair of this year's United Way of Washtenaw County campaign. In the spirit of giving at this time of year, I encourage you to join her community support efforts by participating in the "Local Dollars Changing Local Lives" campaign. Log in to your my.emich account and click on the United Way icon to donate to the organization of your choice. Any size donation makes a difference, and your participation is very much appreciated.

I wish you all a happy and safe Thanksgiving break,

Kim Schatzel, Ph.D.
Provost and Executive Vice President
