James H. Brickley Endowment for Faculty Professional Development and Innovation Award Winners
The James H. Brickley Endowment for Faculty Professional Development and Innovation fund facilitates faculty professional development and innovation through a broad range of activities, including but not limited to, things such as (1) reassigned time from teaching for scholarly, creative, and innovative endeavor; (2) conference presentations; (3) travel; (4) hiring of research assistants; (5) purchase of special equipment or supplies for teaching, scholarly, research, creative, or innovative activities; (6) development of a grant proposal for external funding; and (7) similar or related academic activities.

Community Connections: [email protected], Bright Futures, and Detroit Public TV
In November, the EMU 21st Century Community Learning Center Bright Futures partnered with Beth Marshall, from Detroit Public TV, to deliver a STEM based club using curriculum that featured the PBS character Ruff Ruffman. Youth from Eastern's Bright Futures afterschool grant sites at Ford Early Learning Center and Holmes Elementary participated in the eight hours of curriculum, which presented them with a series of STEM related challenges faced by Ruff Ruffman. Each lesson featured an online video of Ruffman discussing a challenge he faced, a guided virtual experience on a tablet using the PBS app, and hands-on application exercises where the youth applied the STEM concepts to solve challenges faced by Ruff. The PBS Ruff Ruffman experience then culminated with a student showcase, where 100% of participating students' families were in attendance! This was a first for the programs facilitated by DPTV. EMU's Caroline Sanders, Assistant Director of Community Relations and member of PBS's Ready to Learn Community Board, cultivated this partnership for local youth and families. Another round of this programming commenced this week at Ypsilanti’s Parkridge Community Center.

Grant awards for October 2017 totaled almost $2.6 million!
